Flames by Abby Moeller

Seemingly are the basis of destruction.
But what about those who strive for it?
For those who live for it?  Need it?
Why deny those few—or many—
Their happiness, their survival
For your comfort?  Why banish
Them to insanity for your sanity?

Flames may firstly garner hurt
And destruction, but it also gives
Home to the passion in each of
Our souls, and those glorious
Firebirds that give strength to
Those who cannot give it to
Themselves.  Fire is more than
A deadly thing.  It’s madly lively.

“I often trash this piece because it was an early piece of mine and not in my typical mode of voice, but I think it’s important to still use and acknowledge it because it shows where I came from as a writer compared to now. Moreso, this poem talks about a very common thing, fire, in a strange way and I don’t feel as it lives up to other works on the topic.”

Abby Moeller (she/her) is a writer based in Western New York who explores her writing in forms varying from poetry to dramatic monologues to epic fantasy stories.
